Who I am
Barn Owl Live (barnowl.live) is run by Paul David as a non-profit hobby, sharing live wildlife cameras from the Peak District. When this policy says "I", "me" or "Barn Owl Live", it means me. I'm responsible for the personal information collected through this website. You can contact me using the contact form.
What information I collect, and why
When you contact me
If you use the contact form, I collect your name, email address and message, so I can read and reply to it. I keep these messages only as long as I need to deal with your enquiry, and I don't add you to any mailing list unless you ask me to.
When you sign up for the free barn owl book and updates
If you sign up for the free book or updates, I collect your first name and email address so I can send you the book and occasional news from Barn Owl Live. These emails are sent using Zoho Campaigns. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can leave at any time.
When you play the quiz
To play the quiz, you choose a player name. Your player name and best score are saved and shown on the public leaderboard, so please use a nickname rather than your full name, and children should never use their real name. Your player name and sound setting are also remembered on your own device, so you don't have to type them in again.
If you report a mistake in a quiz question, I receive the question, the reason you chose, any comment you write, and your player name. I only use this to check and correct the question.
Quiz scores and question reports are stored in Google Firebase, a secure online database run by Google, with data held in Europe.
When you download free files
When you download a free worksheet, fact sheet, image or icon, a simple counter adds one to the number of downloads for that file. This doesn't record who you are, your IP address or anything else about you. It just helps me see which resources are most popular.
Website statistics
Like most websites, this site may collect anonymous information about how it's used, such as which pages are visited and how people find them, including through Google Search Console. This helps me improve the website. It doesn't identify you personally.
Cookies and similar technology
Cookies are small files stored on your device. This website uses:
- Essential cookies, which help the website work properly and remember your cookie choice.
- Browser storage for the quiz, which remembers your player name and sound setting on your own device.
- Cookies from embedded content, described below.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser's settings. Some parts of the website may not work as well without them.
YouTube videos and other embedded content
The live wildlife cameras and videos on this website are shown using YouTube. When you watch them, YouTube (owned by Google) may collect information and set cookies, just as if you were watching on the YouTube website. Some videos use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, which limits this until you press play. Google's privacy policy explains how it uses this information: policies.google.com/privacy.
Links to Instagram, Facebook and YouTube take you to those websites, which have their own privacy policies.
Who I share your information with
I never sell, rent or trade your personal information. It's only handled by the services that help run this website, including:
- My website host, which stores the website and contact form messages
- Google Firebase, for the quiz leaderboard, question reports and download counters
- Zoho, for the mailing list and free book emails
- YouTube (Google), for the live streams and videos
These companies only use your information to provide their services, and they keep it secure.
How long I keep your information
- Contact messages: only as long as needed to deal with your enquiry.
- Mailing list: until you unsubscribe.
- Quiz names and scores: while the leaderboard runs. Ask me if you'd like yours removed.
- Question reports: until the question has been checked.
Children
Barn Owl Live is a family-friendly website, and many of its resources are made for children. Children can use the quiz and resources without giving any personal details. If you're a child, please ask a parent, carer or teacher before contacting me or signing up for anything, and always use a nickname in the quiz.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:
- ask what personal information I hold about you
- ask me to correct it
- ask me to delete it
- object to how I use it, or ask me to stop using it
- unsubscribe from emails at any time
To do any of these, just contact me, and I'll respond as soon as I can, and within one month.
If you're unhappy with how I've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk. I'd appreciate the chance to put things right first, though, so please get in touch.
Changes to this policy
I may update this policy from time to time, for example if I add new features to the website. The date at the top shows when it was last changed.
